History of Tifton

In 1869, Henry Harding Tift, having left Connecticut to join his uncle's business operations in South Georgia, saw opportunity and potential in the piney woods of present Tift County. A few years later, in 1872, he set up some lumber mill machinery, starting a sawmill beside a railroad. This area grew and on December 29, 1890, was incorporated as a city. Our 'Friendly City,' Tifton, was born.

A cotton mill started in 1900 and led to further industrial growth. Tift County was created on August 17, 1905, with Tifton as the county seat.

Today Tifton has many national manufacturing plants producing a wide range of products including textiles, processed foods, farm implements, aluminum extrusion, automotive supplies and refrigeration equipment.

Through progress, growth and involvement, the citizens of Tifton and Tift County look forward to an exciting future.

Tifton - Tift County Main Street:  The Main Street philosophy is that economic revitalization can be accomplished through historic preservation. By building on assets that are inherent in older downtowns — architectural character, vacant and under-utilized buildings, availability of public services and infrastructure and a history of entrepreneurship — downtowns can become economically healthy again.

Recent projects completed include restoration of the Tift Theater and a Depot Plaza complete with an outdoor stage area. The Tifton Museum of Arts and Heritage has just completed restoration. It is located on Love Avenue in the old First Methodist Church.

We invite you to come discover Tifton's newest stores nestled among the old time favorites on Main Street!

Tifton Museum of Arts & Heritage:  Built in 1901 by Tifton's founder, the Tifton Museum of Arts and Heritage originally served as a church. It features fine heart pinewood, vaulted ceiling and 27 exquisit stained glass windows.
